What Is Marketing? · Part 7

Types of Marketing Agencies (and Which One You Need)

"Marketing agency" is one of the widest labels in business. A two-person print shop, a national ad firm and a data-driven growth team can all use it. They are not the same thing, and hiring the wrong type is one of the most expensive mistakes I see owners make.

    Most agencies are small shops

Census data for 2022 counts 13,682 U.S. advertising agency firms with employees, and 70.3% of them have fewer than five people. Among marketing consulting firms the share under five is 84.7%, and among graphic design firms 84.5% (U.S. Census Bureau, Statistics of U.S. Businesses 2022). On top of that, Census counts 207,863 advertising, PR and related businesses with no payroll at all (U.S. Census Bureau, Nonemployer Statistics 2023).

Small is not bad. It just means you have to ask who actually does the work.

These categories mirror how the government sorts the industry: advertising agencies, PR agencies, media buyers, direct mail, outdoor display, graphic design and marketing consulting each have their own industry code (U.S. Census Bureau, NAICS).

What makes a growth agency different

Most agency types are judged on output: the design, the campaign, the post. We are judged on outcome. Every channel we run is tied back to a call, a form or a sale, and the report shows what each one cost and produced.

    Why transparency matters

The Association of National Advertisers hired investigators in 2016 who found rebates paid by media sellers to agencies, often without the advertiser's knowledge, and media resold to clients at markups of roughly 30% to 90% (ANA). A 2023 ANA study found only about 36 cents of each programmatic ad dollar reached consumers (ANA).

Those studies looked at big national advertisers, but the lesson holds for a local business too: know where every dollar goes. At Love.Marketing, ad budgets are billed by the ad platforms directly to the client, and our fee is separate.

    Questions to ask any agency

    • Will my Google Ads, Analytics, Business Profile and website accounts be in my name?
    • Is ad spend billed by the platform directly to me, or marked up by you?
    • Will reports show calls, forms and sales, or only impressions and clicks?
    • Who does the work: your team, a subcontractor, or a white-label vendor?
    • What happens to my accounts and content if I leave?
